Science, Ethics and Intellectual Property Law: How Orphan Black Got It Completely Wrong. Written by: Jocelyn Bosse. Advisory: This article discusses major plot points from Season One of Orphan Black . 3 Myth One: “Patents are Forever” 4 Myth Two: “Anything can be Patented” 5 Myth Three: “Patents are Secret” 6 Patents and National Security.

7 Ownership of Humans. 8 Legality of 4 aspects thinking, Cloning. Many ethical and legal issues which arise from recent technological and scientific advances are explored in essay samples, the cult television show, Orphan Black . [1] The protagonist, Sarah Manning, discovers that she is one of an unknown number of illegal clones, and in 4 aspects, her quest for on byron's answers, grapples with questions of identity and 4 aspects of critical body autonomy. The issues are brought to darkness, a head in the season one finale, in which evolutionary developmental biologist (and one of the clones), Cosima Niehaus, deciphers a synthetic DNA sequence in her genome to reveal a message: THIS ORGANISM AND DERIVATIVE GENETIC MATERIAL IS RESTRICTED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. [2] Cosima informs the other clones: “The synthetic sequence I told you about? It’s a patent… We’re property… Everything we are, everything we become: it belongs to [the Dyad Institute].” Despite being an 4 aspects of critical thinking, excellent scientist, Cosima’s remarks demonstrate serious ignorance of current patent laws. On The Truman Themes? Indeed, her interpretation of the message reflects many of the myths about intellectual property laws which are prevalent in real life, including that (a) patents are forever; (b) anything may be patented; and that, (c) patents are secret. This article will debunk the intellectual property myths which appear in the Orphan Black finale. Pursuant to some remarks by Cosima’s lab partner in season two, the thinking, article will conclude with a discussion about the prevalent use of government secrecy orders over patents for papers on bestsellers the protection of national security, and some final notes about of critical thinking, physical property rights and the legality of human cloning. Intellectual property – like all law – varies between countries. [3] Though filmed in Canada, the creators of Orphan Black have indicated that the show takes place in “Generica” – a hybrid of Canada and the United States of America. [4] However, the question of jurisdiction is further complicated by the existence of clones across the darkness, globe, including England, Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Finland, Austria, France, and probably other nations.

Ever since the of critical thinking, establishment of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1967, [5] there has been considerable harmonisation of patents laws across the globe. Despite the ambiguity of the show’s jurisdiction, we can still make overall statements about the papers on bestsellers, legal position of the clones in thinking, Orphan Black by reference to international law and the patent laws of relevant countries (especially the USA, Canada, the EU, Australia, and New Zealand). 3 Myth One: “Patents are Forever” Unlike diamonds, patents rights do not extend in perpetuity. Instead, patents give a temporary monopoly to the inventor, during which time they may recoup their research and development costs. Upon expiration of the short one act, patent, the of critical, invention enters the public domain. [6] The first patents under the Statute of Monopolies 1624 (UK) were granted for fourteen years, but since the signing of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights 1994 (‘TRIPS’), patents have a non-renewable term of twenty years. On Bestsellers? [7] While term extensions are available under rare circumstances (e.g. delay in the application process in Canada, or the five-year pharmaceutical extensions in 4 aspects thinking, Australia), none of those exceptions would apply to essays on the, human clones.

In Canada, the 20-year term was introduced in October 1989; [8] however, the 4 aspects thinking, Orphan Black clones were born in 1984, [9] so any patents would have been subject to the previous rule that patents expired after 17 years. Essays On The Themes? Given that the main Orphan Black clones are currently about 32 years old, we can safely assume that any purported patents on their genetic information would have expired more than a decade earlier. Of Critical Thinking? The genomic sequence tag which Cosima discovered was meaningless: any patented information would be in the public domain. 4 Myth Two: “Anything can be Patented” Under s 6 of the Statute of Monopolies 1624 (UK), patents must not be “contrary to show themes, the law, nor mischievous to the state… or generally inconvenient.” As for modern patent laws, Article 27 of the TRIPS Agreement allows countries to exclude patentable subject matter in 4 aspects of critical, order to types of modern essay, protect “ ordre public ” and thinking morality; this includes, for example, protection of human, animal or plant life or health, and essays on the the environment. 4 Aspects Of Critical Thinking? Countries are also allowed to exclude plants or animals (including humans) from patentability, and several nations have done just that. The TRIPS terminology was borrowed from borrowed from Article 53(a) of the European Patent Convention (‘EPC’), and the European Board of Appeals defined the concept of ordre public as covering the on byron's darkness, protection of public security and integrity of individuals as part of society. 4 Aspects? [10] The EU Directive on Biotechnological Inventions [11] clearly prohibits patents on human clones: 1. The human body , at the various stages of research on bestsellers, its formation and development, and the simple discovery of one of its elements, including the sequence or partial sequence of a gene, cannot constitute patentable inventions… 1. Inventions shall be considered unpatentable where their commercial exploitation would be contrary to ordre public or morality ; however, exploitation shall not be deemed to be so contrary merely because it is 4 aspects of critical, prohibited by law or regulation. 2. On the basis of paragraph 1, the following, in particular, shall be considered unpatentable: (a) processes for cloning human beings ; (b) processes for research on bestsellers modifying the germ line genetic identity of human beings; (c) uses of human embryos for industrial or commercial purposes; … The Canadian Supreme Court has held that higher life forms (defined as multicellular organisms, including plants, mice, and humans) are not patentable subject matter. [12] Meanwhile, Australian legislation bans the patenting of human life in s 18(2) of the Patents Act 1990 (Cth): “Human beings, and the biological processes for their generation, are not patentable inventions.” The Deputy Commissioner of Patents has held that s18(2) extends to any entity which might reasonably claim the status of of critical thinking, a human being, so the genetically modified clones would still fall within that exception. [13] Likewise, human clones are excluded under s 15 of the New Zealand Patents Act 2013 for reasons of research, ordre public and morality. [14] The position is less concrete in the United States.

The US Patent and of critical thinking Trademark Office has granted a patent in 2001 for a method for producing embryos from unfertilised eggs, to create cloned livestock. [15] Despite concerns that the patent would extend in to on byron's darkness, human cloning, the USPTO maintained a policy of refusing patents for human-related cloning on thinking, the grounds of a purported violation of the 13th amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits slavery. [16] Although the on the show themes, 13th amendment is no longer invoked, patents related to thinking, human cloning are still not granted by the USPTO. As such, the Orphan Black clones would definitely not be subject to patents in the EU, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. Essay Stories Plays? The current USPTO policy also means that the Dyad Institute could not have obtained patents over the clones in 4 aspects, the United States. 5 Myth Three: “Patents are Secret” The original “letters patent” were developed in the 1600s as a trade-off between inventors and the Crown: the British monarch would grant a monopoly over essay, the invention, while the details of the invention had to be fully disclosed for the benefit of society. [17] Indeed, the word “patent” means open to observation, evident, obvious – a patent is the antithesis of a secret invention. The full text of patents can be easily found online, using a variety of means: · Google – many patents are available through Google. Thinking? For example, the patent for entertaining a cat with a laser pointer (don’t panic, it lapsed back in 2007) is publicly available here ( ). · International – the on the show, UN World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has a database of 4 aspects thinking, patent applications via Patentscope ( ). Types Of Modern Essay? Note, however, that there is no such thing as an 4 aspects, “international patent” – WIPO merely facilitates the application process across different countries. Inventors must register their patents in every country in which they seek protection.

· Canada – the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) allows you to freely search their patents database here ( ). · United States of America – the essays darkness, US Patent and Trademark Office has a searchable register here ( ). · New Zealand – the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand has their database here ( · Europe – the European Patent Office has a patent register called Espacenet ( Consequently, if the Dyad Institute had patented the genetic information of the Orphan Black clones, it would be freely accessible on the patent register of each country where a patent was held, and probably available on Google. Cosima could have avoided many hours of of critical, scientific research into on byron's darkness, her own genome by simply looking up the of critical thinking, patent numbers on the USPTO or CIPO Registers. Only one category of patents can be kept secret: those which are subject to on byron's darkness, secrecy orders in 4 aspects, the interests of national defence. 6 Patents and National Security. In Season Two of Orphan Black , Cosima discusses the research, patents with her lab partner, who remarks that “The Dyad was just a contractor. 4 Aspects Of Critical Thinking? It could be a secret military patent.” So, the on the, question arises, what are ‘secret military patents’ and what do they mean for the Orphan Black clones?

The tension between certain private rights and public rights – in this case, intellectual property and human security – leads to a difficult balancing act in 4 aspects of critical thinking, the patent laws. Although disclosure is specific, one of the hallmark principles of patent law, publication of the details of certain inventions can pose risks to national security, especially if they relate to thinking, chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Essays On The Themes? [18] Governments are often concerned that the information disclosed in patent documents will end up in the “wrong hands,” particularly patents on of critical, weaponry and explosives which could be used by terrorist groups. There are also issues with potential misuse of dual-use technologies (those with current or potential military and civilian applications, e.g. ammonium nitrate, which could be used to produce propellant for ballistic missiles, but is essay, mainly used in the manufacture of fertilisers). [19] As such, some patents are temporarily made secret in order to protect national security. International Secrecy Orders. Article 73 of the TRIPS Agreement sets out 4 aspects of critical thinking, “Security Exceptions” and provides that Member states need not furnish information where disclosure would be contrary to its essential security interests.

Likewise, Article 4 of the Patent Law Treaty 2000 (‘PLT’) stipulates that “nothing in this Treaty and research on bestsellers the Regulations shall limit the freedom of a Contracting Party to take any action it deems necessary for the preservation of essential security interests.” [20] Secrecy Orders in 4 aspects thinking, the USA. During World War I, the US Congress authorised the Patent and Trademark Office to truman show, temporarily classify certain defence-related patents in the interests on national security. [21] The legislation was extended during World War II to allow the thinking, Commissioner of Patents to prevent publication or disclosure of a patent where it might be “detrimental to the public safety or defence,” as well as to compensate the short stories one act, applicant if the subject matter of the patent is used by the military. The laws were eventually replaced with the Invention Secrecy Act 1951 (US), which allows the American Federal Government to issue secrecy orders via the Commissioner of Patents, which are subject to of critical, an annual renewal process, except in times of war or national emergency. The use of these orders has been on the rise: [22] 5,445 secrecy orders were in effect in essay samples, 2013, and 5,579 in 2015. [23] For example, Juliet Marine Systems developed a stealth boat which was unexpectedly made subject to a secrecy order in October 2009, thereby forbidding them from filing patents overseas or disclosing anything to 4 aspects thinking, potential investors until the order was lifted two years later. [24]

In Canada, the Minister of National Defence may take ownership of a patent for “any invention in instruments or munitions of war,” [25] and has the power to make the invention secret under s 20(5). The inventor(s) become(s) subject to s 4 of the Security of Information Act , and are thereby banned from communication of any details of the cbest essay samples, invention without the authority of the Minister of National Defence. Under s 20(9) of the Patents Act, the 4 aspects, information may be kept secret until the expiration of the patent, or until it is waived by the Minister. The Australian Department of Defence is essay samples, empowered under s 152 of the Patents Act 1990 (Cth) to prohibit the publication of the details of a patent application, at of critical thinking which point it must be handled by a patent examiner with the requisite security clearance. [26] The prohibition order may remain in force until the expiration of the patent, unless it is revoked by the Department of Defence. Similar provisions can be found in ss 132-134 of the New Zealand Patents Act 2013 . However, while Cosima’s lab partner raised a very interesting point about the research, potential use of secrecy orders over patents, the fact remains that human clones are not patentable (and if they were, the patents would have expired). There can be no secrecy order if there is no valid patent to 4 aspects of critical thinking, begin with. As far as tangible property rights are concerned, the on the, message in Cosima’s genome asserted proprietary rights over thinking, her body, and essays on the happiest any derivative material. Since the of critical thinking, abolition of slavery, there has been a strict legal separation of property rights and personhood. Cbest Samples? In fact, property rights over human body parts have arguably been excluded from legal protection for two millennia: the Roman jurist, Ulpian, gave the maxim dominus membrorum suorum nemo videtur (“no one is the owner of of critical, their own limbs”), which has been interpreted in the English law to mean that a living human body cannot be the object of property rights. [27] In words of Justice Edelman of the Federal Court of Australia: “Whatever meaning is given to ‘property’, it is independent of personhood. The antithesis of ‘property’ is personhood.

A living person can be the holder of a property right but he or she cannot be the object of it.” [28] The Romans would also consider the deceased clones to be res extra patrimonium and cbest essay res extra commercium ; a corpse is generally inviolable and thinking unsaleable. [29] In modern jurisprudence, the types of modern, Supreme Court of California has affirmed the Roman principles: the Court in Moore v Regents of the University of California [30] rejected a property claim over Moore’s own body parts (his spleen, blood, skin, and sperm) which had been used without consent for commercial purposes. Of Critical Thinking? Justice Panelli, in the plurality judgment, remarked: [31] “Neither the Court of essays on the happiest refugee, Appeal's opinion, the parties' briefs, nor our research discloses a case holding that a person retains a sufficient interest in excised cells to 4 aspects, support a cause of action for conversion. We do not find this surprising, since the laws governing such things as human tissues, transplantable organs, blood, fetuses, pituitary glands, corneal tissue, and dead bodies deal with human biological materials as objects sui generis, regulating their disposition to achieve policy goals rather than abandoning them to the general law of essays on the show, personal property… The ramifications of recognizing and enforcing a property interest in body tissues are not known, but are greatly feared for the effect on human dignity of a marketplace in 4 aspects thinking, human body parts, the impact on research and development of competitive bidding for such materials, and the exposure of researchers to potentially limitless and uncharted tort liability.” As such, the Orphan Black clones (alive and whole, or otherwise) could not be subject to a proprietary claim from the Dyad Institute. The law is concerned with two main types of refugee, cloning: (i) therapeutic cloning , which is the use of clonally propagated stem cells for the purposes of 4 aspects thinking, scientific research and medical treatment, and (ii) reproductive cloning , in which a cloned embryo is papers on bestsellers, implanted into a womb. 4 Aspects Of Critical? [32] While therapeutical cloning is legal in many states, the Orphan Black clones were created by darkness reproductive cloning, which is generally illegal.

In March 2005, the of critical, United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on Human Cloning, which called on members to adopt all measures necessary to prohibit human cloning inasmuch as it is incompatible with human dignity and the protection of cbest samples, human life. 4 Aspects Thinking? [33] The Declaration also called upon essays truman show themes, members to prohibit the application of 4 aspects of critical thinking, genetic engineering techniques that may be contrary to human dignity and to papers on bestsellers, prevent the exploitation of women in the application of life sciences. However, the Declaration has no binding authority over UN members, and would have no impact upon of critical thinking, the legality of essays on the, producing the Orphan Black clones. Article 3(d) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union explicitly prohibits reproductive human cloning. France, Germany, Austria, Italy and of critical Russia have completely banned human cloning, to name a few. In the United Kingdom, reproductive cloning is darkness, banned, [34] while therapeutic cloning has been tightly regulated by the Human Fertilisation and 4 aspects of critical Embryology Authority since 1990. [35] The Dyad Institute could not have (legally) produced the short plays, Orphan Black clones in the United Kingdom, nor any other EU member states. Furthermore, the Council of Europe has specifically banned reproductive cloning in the Convention on Human Rights with Regard to thinking, Biomedicine 1997, which held to apply in European countries where no legislation has been passed to address the legality of human cloning. [36] Canada has a complete ban on human cloning, both therapeutic and reproductive, pursuant to s 5(1)(a) of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act 2004 . As such, the Orphan Black clones could not have been created there. Reproductive cloning is also banned in Australia under the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002 (Cth). Although the desire to improve scientific research and on the medical treatment meant that the of critical thinking, ban on essays happiest, therapeutic cloning was lifted in of critical, 2006, [37] the reproductive cloning conducted by essays darkness the Dyad Institute would still be illegal in 4 aspects of critical thinking, Australia. [38] The picture is more complicated in the United States, where the Congress has repeatedly failed to enact legislation to address human cloning, and there are no Federal laws with respect to specific essay, human cloning. [39] Public funding for 4 aspects human cloning and stem cell research was restricted in 2001 under the Bush Administration, [40] but that would not be a barrier for a wealthy private institute like Dyad. [41] While fifteen states ban reproductive cloning, [42] the Dyad Institute could have produced the Orphan Black clones in other parts of the essays happiest, country. Nevertheless, the 4 aspects of critical thinking, Dyad Institute would have no legal control over Sarah Manning, Cosima Niehaus, or the other clones.

It is cbest essay samples, a complete myth that patents can be obtained over humans, so the clone-sisters would, in fact, be autonomous individuals who are free from any legitimate claims to tangible or intellectual property rights. The mass-production of of critical thinking, human clones by a malevolent corporation might still be pure science fiction, but the legal questions raised by Orphan Black are no less important to the real world. Many countries – particularly the United States – are still struggling to cbest, pass legislation which adequately regulates therapeutic and reproductive cloning, which has significant consequences for medical research and of critical assisted reproduction. Furthermore, the essays truman themes, use of government secrecy orders illustrates the of critical, difficult balancing act between the protection of national security, and the promotion of private innovation. While the fictional clones in Orphan Black are (incorrectly) concerned by the Dyad Institute’s intellectual property rights over their bodies, real people across the globe stand to benefit, or suffer, from the enforcement of poorly-understood patent laws, and the legislative control of human cloning. IGCSE and GCSE Geography Coursework (Paper 4) Paper 4 is the alternative to coursework paper that is worth 27.5% of your final IGCSE grade. The coursework paper tests your understanding of how coursework is carried out. The paper is 1 hour and 4 aspects of critical thinking, 30 minutes long and divided into two 30 mark questions. You answer all the questions on the examination paper, most questions are short in length, between 1 and 4 marks. The paper requires a combination of knowledge and skills. The questions usually focus on coursework to on the themes do with; coasts, rivers, settlements or weather. As a IGCSE geographer it is possible to carry out coursework on many aspects of the of critical thinking course. Essay Short Stories Plays. Possible topics and areas of 4 aspects of critical, study may include: Changes in essay stories plays river velocity from source to mouth Changes in load (shape and size) from source to mouth Changes in channel depth, width, cross-section and wetted perimeter from of critical, source to mouth Changes in discharge from source to on the show themes mouth Changes across a meanders cross section Changes in 4 aspects of critical thinking river gradient from cbest samples, source to mouth Changes in of critical thinking valley size and gradient from research papers on bestsellers, source to mouth Changes in land use a long a river Changes in pollution along a rivers' course (you need proper equipment for this) Changes in 4 aspects thinking vegetation (cover and variety) moving inland Changes in essays on byron's beach profile and sand dune profile Speed of longshore drift Changes in land use Changes in 4 aspects thinking defences (compare to land use) Changes in beach or dune material (size or shape)

Changes in land use Changes in traffic (maybe CBD to rural-urban fringe) Changes in pedestrians Number and type of tourists Changes in the quality of the specific environment or pollution levels (may look at the impact of industry) Changes in globalisation Changes in cost of of critical thinking, products Comparison to Burgess or Hoyt Model Changes in wealth or population density (will have to use some secondary data) Sphere of influences of settlements or services. Changes in cbest essay samples temperature throughout the day or between seasons Changes in rainfall Changes in humidity Changes in hours of 4 aspects of critical thinking, sunshine or cloud cover Changes in wind speed and wind direction. Before you choose your coursework you have to decide if you live in a suitable study location. For example it is no use trying to do a piece of coursework on rivers, if you live in the middle of a desert. Before starting your coursework, you should also think about how you can carry out the coursework safely and definitely carry out on byron's darkness, a risk assessment. You can make your coursework safer by doing the following: Protection from the weather (waterproof jacket, umbrella, hat, suncream) Sensible dress (remember you will be representing your school, but you should also wear clothes that don't draw attention to yourself Always carry out coursework in groups Always tell an of critical thinking adult or teacher where you area carrying out coursework Always carry a mobile phone with you Never do coursework near a river or the sea without an adult or teacher and without them checking that it is safe Carry out coursework in research papers on bestsellers day light and wear reflective clothes Check that your study area is safe.

For example it wouldn't be safe walking around downtown San Salvador Don't display valuables making you more vulnerable to crime e.g. if you have a camera or a phone keep it out of sight. Specification: Formulating aims and 4 aspects of critical, hypotheses: Candidates should be familiar with hypotheses as statements that form the basis of Coursework assignments. The hypotheses may investigate a geographical concept e.g. ‘A CBD has the essays on the happiest highest concentration of comparison shops’. Collecting relevant data, analysis and drawing conclusions using the data as evidence can test these. The width of 4 aspects thinking, a river will increase as you move from the source to the mouth The amount of traffic will increase as you move from the rural-urban fringe to the CBD The amount of vegetation will increase as you move inland from the essays on byron's sea (distance = 200metres) The hottest part of the day will be between 1200 and 1400. Whenever you are doing data collection, the of critical thinking aim is to themes be as objective as possible. 4 Aspects. Objective means that no bias or personal opinion affects the outcome of your results. The opposite to be objective is being subjective. Being subjective simple means that your own personal views and bias has influenced results. It is up to essays truman date (current) You know how the 4 aspects of critical data has been collected i.e. what technique It only includes data that is relevant to your coursework It only covers your study area It is collected in essays darkness the format that you want.

You can study temporal changes e.g. how population has changed over a number of years It can be quicker, especially if the data is on the internet You can study a larger area It may include data that you can not obtain personally e.g. Thinking. salaries. The data may include some personal bias Data collection can be time consuming It can be expensive to travel to essays on the truman themes places to collect data It is hard to study temporal changes Some data might be unavailable or too dangerous to of critical thinking collect Only possible to cover a small area. It is out of date, especially if it has been printed in a book. There might more information than you need The information may include a larger area than your study area You may not know how the data was collected and who collected the data The data might be in truman themes the wrong format e.g. in a graph and not raw figures. Quantitative data: This is any data that involves figures. Quantitative data is 4 aspects, very easy to present and analyse. On Bestsellers. Even though it is easy to present it can be very general and exclude some data.

Because you are following a pattern you will get better coverage of an area or sample group. Even though you pick the 4 aspects technique, once it is picked, there is no bias in who gets selected. It is very simple to understand and carry out. Because you are selecting the systematic technique, there is some bias (subjectivity). Of Modern. You decide how often to take a sample. Even with a systematic sample you may end up with an unrepresentative sample e.g. 4 Aspects Of Critical Thinking. you ask every 10th person to essays truman fill in a questionnaire, but every 10th person turns out to thinking be female. Every person or every location/place has a completely equal chance of specific of modern, being selected It is quick and simple. Because it is totally random, results maybe completely random and not representative e.g. when randomly selecting names out of hat to ask questionnaires too, you only 4 aspects of critical thinking, pick females. Stratified sampling: Because both systematic and random sampling can give you a unrepresentative sample, if you have some secondary data that allows you to essays rank your sample group you can then carry out 4 aspects of critical thinking, stratified sampling.

For example if you are carrying out environmental indexes in a city that has 12 districts, if you randomly or systematically select four, you may pick th efour best or the four worst. However, if you know the average income of those 12 areas (census data) you can them rank them 1 to 12 and then randomly or systematically pick a district from each quartile giving you a more representative sample. Decide on your questions (what do you need to find out and short stories one act, what type of question are you going to thinking ask) Whether to do the questions orally or give them in on byron's written form (you may have to think about translations) How you are going to pilot (test) your questions How you are going to 4 aspects thinking record the answers (record them, write them down, trying to papers remember is of critical, unreliable) How you are going to sample (random, systematic, stratified) Remember that you are representing yourself and the school - be polite Remember people don't have to answer questions and they may be sensitive about papers some e.g. age groups and income groups. When actually designing your questions you have two real choice; open or closed: You are getting the respondents personal opinion. They are not limited in their response. Some responses might not be relevant to your research Respondents may not understand the question and 4 aspects of critical thinking, give you an happiest irrelevant response Results are very hard to analyse using graphs or tables.

All answers will be relevant to your research The results are easy to analyse using graphs and tables. The results lack personal opinion. They can be very generalised You are nearly always forced to have an other box meaning you don't know what the respondent thinks Your personal opinion has been placed on the questions (subjective). Specification: Observation – Examples of 4 aspects thinking, using observations as an enquiry skill to stories plays collect data include the recording of land-use in an urban area or observations of river or coastal features. Maps, recording sheets, field sketches and annotated photographs may all be used to record candidate observations. It is important to always have an other category, because you always find a land use that you have not thought about. They are more accurate than field sketches They can be good for showing data collection techniques e.g. measuring a river's load They can support data collection findings e.g. Of Critical Thinking. they can show an example of a poor environment They can show temporal changes, especially if you can find historical photos.

You can annotate and label them. People often include photos that are not relevant e.g. a photo of their friends People forget to label, annotate or refer to photos, which then makes them irrelevant. People often only photograph the nice things e.g. On The. pretty view and forget the more ugly areas that are just as important e.g. area of pollution They can often contains too much information e.g. people and vehicles Because they are two dimensional, depth can be deceptive. Specification: Counts – Pedestrian and traffic counts are two significant examples of this enquiry skill. Appropriate methods for recording the counts should be discussed including the 4 aspects of critical thinking layout of recording sheets, instructions and the necessary information required to identify the on the refugee sheet following the count (i.e. time, date, location and name of 4 aspects of critical, recorder). Geography fieldwork equipment can be used to measure virtually anything, but is essays, most commonly used to take measurements along a river or at a beach.

Below are photos and descriptions of some of the most common types of geography equipment. Transect: A transect is basically a line a long which you take measurements. You may have a transect that runs from the 4 aspects thinking rural-urban fringe to the CBD or a transect that runs from the sea in land through sand dunes. In a real piece of coursework, you would explain how all your data was collected. In your description you would probably contain the essay samples following information: Date, time and location of data collection Group size Description and copy of data collection forms used e.g. questionnaires or counts Explanation of how the forms were used e.g. sample size, count period, count technique, etc. Description of equipment and of critical, an explanation of its use.

Instead of writing a methodology in your exam, you may be asked to specific of modern essay write a set of instructions, explaining how data collection should be carried out. Thinking. For example you might be asked to give a set of instructions for themes, doing a traffic count. You might say: Find a safe location near the road your are counting traffic Count the traffic in of critical both directions for a 10 minute period A tally should be used for one act, counting because this is easy and quick At the end of 10 minutes count up the totals for each type of vehicle. You may also be asked about how your data collection could be improved. Improvements may be made in thinking some of the following ways: Do counts more regularly e.g. every one or two hours Do counts, surveys or indexes in of modern essay more locations Do counts, surveys and indexes on different days of the week (including weekends) Get two groups doing the of critical same survey, index or count so that an average may be taken. Specification: Data presentation techniques: A knowledge of the illustrative techniques to present data across the topics for Paper 4 is required.

This should include, various types of graphs, maps and diagrams for example line graphs, bar graphs, divided bar graphs, histograms, flow diagrams, wind rose graphs, isoline maps, scatter graphs, pie graphs, triangular graphs and radial graphs. If you are asked to short stories complete a graph or table, all the 4 aspects of critical thinking data will be there for you so read the research on bestsellers data carefully and complete the graph/table/diagram carefully. Shows spatial distribution e.g. dot map Shows variations between regions and countries e.g. 4 Aspects Of Critical. choropleth map Visually interesting (interesting colours, symbols) Very bold and clear Easy to understand Clearly shows trends and anomallies. Can disguise intra-region or intra-country variations e.g. choropleth map Hard to see trends and cbest essay samples, anomalies Very complicated to read Symbols take up to much room. Specification: Analysis: Candidates should be able to describe the patterns in data presented in thinking graphs and tables of results.

Reference to relevant geographical knowledge and refugee, understanding is often required in the interpretation of the data. Practice of this skill will improve success in Paper 4 questions. Look for trends and correlations (if there is not a overall trend, look for smaller trends) Look for anomalies (things that don't fit the general trend) When ever you refer to 4 aspects of critical thinking trend and on the themes, anomalies you must support with evidence e.g. facts and figures from graph or table. Thinking. Try and explain trends (refer back to theory or other information that you have discovered in your investigation) Try and explain anomalies. Specification: Formation of essay short stories, conclusions: Using the evidence from the data, candidates should be able to make judgements on the validity of the original hypothesis or aims of the assignment. Reference is also required of the reliability of the of critical collected data and a critical evaluation of the chosen data collection methods. Refer back to original hypothesis Use some data to support your findings Refer to theory (if mentioned in introduction) - do your findings agree or disagree with theory State what you have learnt from your investigation.

Evaluation : In an evaluation you state what went well in essays on byron's darkness your research, but also how it can be improved or extended in the future. If you are asked to write an evaluation, think about the following: What went well (keep this brief) Any problems with data collection e.g. 4 Aspects Of Critical. bad weather, missing data, sampling technique, questions, data collection form Data that could be useful in the future e.g. secondary data from government, more questionnaires (bigger sample) Additional hypothesis that you could have used Problems with time or money that could be changed in the future.
